REVERSE MORTGAGE
TOM WALKER
President/CEO, MEMBERS Trust Company
EQUITY IN REVERSE MORTGAGE… WILL YOU STILL FEED ME WHEN I’M 64?
This Beatles’ song now takes on real meaning for baby bombers as opposed to a youthful distance and rhetorical musing experienced in earlier years by many (including the speaker) in this generation. Experts have labeled the approaching last cycle of this python of a generation as the power years, regeneration phase, and deaccumulation stage. The latter certainly can claim its space which gives rise to the demand and need for reverse mortgages.
Equity in a home , despite falling home prices, constitutes a valuable resource and tool for this generation to supplement retirement income, provide cash to meet estate planning goals, enable them to age in place, and overall enjoy the days of their last cycle in control and in their own way.
This session will de-mystify several falsehoods about this product including: only impoverished seniors can benefit, the borrowers lose their home, the cost/benefits for the senior renders this product a bad bargain, lenders assume grave financial and reputation risks, and heirs adamantly object to a reverse mortgage.
Tom Walker has been President /CEO of MEMBERS Trust Company since its inception in 1987. He closed the first line of credit reverse mortgage made by private lender in 1987 at Suncoast Schools FCU. He offers real life experiences and an understanding of the legal , financial, and business factors to consider in developing a strategy to expand a credit union’s senior lending program to include reverse mortgages.
